Brand Voice Development: Why You Sound Like Every Other Boring Blog

If your brand voice is "professional and approachable," congratulations -- you sound like everyone else. Time to fix that.

"Professional Yet Approachable" Is Not a Brand Voice

It's a non-answer.

Go read your About page. Then go read your competitor's. Then read five more.

Sound familiar? That's because you're all using the same bland, corporate, say-nothing tone.

Hear me when I say this: if your content could have been written by any company in your industry, you don't have a brand voice. You have a template.

Why Brand Voice Matters for SEO

Brand voice drives engagement signals.

Unique, memorable content gets more time on page, more shares, more return visits, and more branded searches. All things Google loves. These are the SEO KPIs that actually matter.

Generic content gets skimmed and forgotten. Your bounce rate goes up. Your rankings go down.

How to Find Your Real Voice

Step 1: Listen to your founder talk. Record a conversation about the business. Transcribe it. That raw, unfiltered passion? That's your starting point.

Step 2: Define your voice with contrasts.

Don't say "professional." Say "We're expert but never stuffy."

Don't say "friendly." Say "We're your smartest friend at the bar, not a customer service bot."

Don't say "innovative." Say "We call BS on outdated tactics."

Step 3: Create a voice chart. Four dimensions: tone (formal to casual), language (simple to complex), humor (none to frequent), perspective (neutral to opinionated).

Pick a spot on each spectrum and COMMIT.

Step 4: Build a "we say / we don't say" list. We say "broken." We don't say "suboptimal." We say "let's fix this." We don't say "we recommend addressing this going forward."

Step 5: Test it. Give your voice guidelines to three different writers. Create proper writing briefs so they have clear direction. Can they all produce content that sounds like the same brand? If not, refine until they can.

The Result

A brand voice that's yours and nobody else's. Content that people recognize before they see the logo. A blog that readers actually come back to.

And when every post is both on-brand and on-page optimized?
