Content Gap Analysis: Finding the Topics Your Site Is Missing

Content gap analysis reveals what your audience searches for that you don't have content for. Close the gaps, win the traffic.

What You Don't Have Is Costing You

Content gap analysis answers one question:

What is your audience searching for that you have NO content for?

Every gap is lost traffic. Lost leads. Lost revenue.

And most sites have dozens of gaps they don't even know about.

How to Find Content Gaps

Method 1: Competitor Gap Analysis

Compare your keyword rankings against competitors. Keywords they rank for that you don't = gaps.

Use the "Content Gap" feature in Ahrefs or SEMrush. Our competitor keyword gap analysis guide walks through this in detail.

Method 2: Keyword Coverage Audit

Take your complete keyword list. Map it against your existing content. Keywords with no corresponding page = gaps. This is essentially keyword-to-page mapping in reverse.

Method 3: Search Console Mining

Look at queries where your site gets impressions but no clicks. You're showing up, but you don't have the right page. That's a gap.

Method 4: Customer Journey Mapping

Map out every question a customer asks from awareness to purchase. Do you have content for each stage? Missing stages = gaps. Check out our broader content gap analysis for SEO guide for additional frameworks.

Prioritising Gaps

Not all gaps are equal. Prioritise by:

  • Revenue potential — gaps closest to purchase intent first
  • Volume and difficulty — winnable gaps with decent traffic
  • Competitive weakness — gaps where current SERP results are weak
  • Strategic importance — topics central to your brand authority
  • Close Gaps Strategically

Don't just publish 50 new pages at once. Prioritise. Create. Measure. Iterate.

Quality over quantity. One excellent page is worth more than five mediocre ones. Ahrefs covers content gap methodology extensively in their keyword research workflow.
