Build It and They Will Link
Okay, not always. But the right content absolutely does attract links without any outreach at all.
These are called linkable assets. And every site should have them.
What Makes Content Linkable?
People link to content that makes THEM look good. Content they can reference to support their own arguments. Content that saves their readers time.
Specifically:
Original data. Numbers nobody else has. Surveys you ran. Industry analysis you conducted. This is the power behind data-driven content for link building.
Comprehensive resources. The ultimate guide that covers everything in one place.
Free tools and calculators. Interactive resources people use and share. We have a whole guide on building free tools for backlinks.
Visual content. Infographics, charts, and maps that people embed in their own articles.
Statistics pages. Curated collections of industry stats that writers reference constantly.
The Litmus Test
Before creating a linkable asset, ask: "Would a journalist or blogger reference this to support a point they're making?"
If yes, you've got something.
If no, it's just content. Good for traffic, maybe. But not inherently linkable.
Examples That Work
The Creation Framework
This is the closest thing to passive link building that exists. Moz covers the concept of linkable assets thoroughly in their beginner's guide to link building.
