The Ecommerce Link Building Problem
Nobody wants to link to your product page. Sorry.
Blog posts, tools, research — these are inherently linkable. A product page for "blue running shoes"? Not so much.
This is the fundamental challenge of ecommerce link building. And it requires a different approach.
Strategy 1: Create Linkable Content Around Your Products
You can't get links to product pages directly. So create content that RELATES to your products and attracts links. Our ecommerce SEO strategy guide covers this in much more detail.
Sell running shoes? Create "The Complete Runner's Training Guide" or "Running Injury Statistics: 2026 Report."
Those get links. And the internal links from those pages pass authority to your product pages.
Strategy 2: Product-Led PR
Launch limited editions. Create unique products. Partner with influencers for exclusive drops.
These generate press coverage, which generates links, which passes authority to your entire domain. This is digital PR applied to ecommerce.
Strategy 3: Supplier and Manufacturer Links
If you sell products from known brands, you may be eligible for "where to buy" or "authorized retailer" pages on the manufacturer's website.
These are high-authority, highly relevant links that most ecommerce sites never think to pursue.
Strategy 4: Scholarship/Sponsorship Links
Sponsor local events. Create scholarships. Support nonprofits. This is local link building through sponsorships applied at scale.
These organizations link to their sponsors from .edu and .org pages. Legitimate, authoritative links.
Strategy 5: Broken Link Building on Resource Pages
Find resource pages in your product niche with broken links. Offer your content (not product pages) as replacements.
The Internal Linking Bridge
Remember: external links to your blog content boost your domain authority. Internal links from that blog content to your product pages transfer that authority.
The path is: external links > blog content > internal links > product pages > rankings.
After 500+ campaigns, we've seen this architecture work consistently for ecommerce brands of all sizes. Moz's beginner's guide to link building discusses this exact internal linking strategy.
