FAQ Schema: Take Up More Space in Search Results (For Free)

FAQ schema can double the size of your search listing with expandable Q&A. Here is how to implement it correctly.

Want to Dominate the SERP Without Building More Links?

FAQ schema.

When it works, your search result gets expandable questions and answers directly in the SERP. Your listing takes up significantly more real estate. More space = more visibility = more clicks.

Important Caveat

Google has reduced FAQ rich results. As of 2023, FAQ rich results are only shown for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. For most other sites, FAQ schema may not generate visible rich results.

But.

Adding FAQ schema is still valuable for helping Google understand your content structure. Google's structured data documentation covers the current eligibility rules. And policies change. When (not if) Google expands FAQ visibility again, sites with existing markup will benefit immediately.

How to Implement It

The FAQ must exist visibly on the page. Google explicitly states: do not add FAQ schema for content that is not visible to users.

Each question-answer pair is a `Question` within a `FAQPage` schema.

Keep answers concise in the schema. You can have longer answers on the page itself, but the schema answer should be a focused summary.

The Rules

Answers must not be used for advertising purposes. Each question must include the full text of the answer. Content must be accurate and not misleading.

Violate these and Google may issue a manual action. Not worth the risk. If you are new to structured data, start with our schema markup beginner guide. And always test your markup before deploying.
