Keyword Performance Tracking: What to Measure and When to Pivot

Tracking keyword performance tells you what's working and what's not. Here's how to measure, interpret, and act on the data.

You Can't Improve What You Don't Measure

You published the content. You targeted the keywords. You did the work.

Now what?

If you're not tracking performance, you're flying blind. And flying blind in SEO means wasting months on strategies that aren't working.

What to Track

Rankings

Where do you rank for each target keyword? Track weekly.

More important than the absolute position: the trend. Are you moving up, down, or sideways?

Organic Traffic

How many visitors does each page get from organic search? Track monthly.

Look at traffic trends, not individual data points. One bad month isn't a crisis. Three declining months is a pattern.

Click-Through Rate (CTR)

From Search Console. If you rank #3 but your CTR is below average, your title tag or meta description needs work. Writing headlines that get clicks can dramatically improve your CTR without changing your rankings.

High impressions + low CTR = opportunity to improve without creating new content.

Conversions

The metric that actually pays the bills.

How many organic visitors convert to leads, trials, or customers? Track this per page and per keyword cluster.

A page ranking #1 with zero conversions is a vanity metric.

Keyword Cannibalisation

Monitor for multiple URLs ranking for the same keyword. If Google is flip-flopping between pages, you've got a cannibalisation problem.

When to Pivot

After 3-6 Months With No Movement

If a page hasn't gained any traction after 6 months:

  • Update the content
  • Check if the intent has changed
  • Evaluate whether the keyword is realistic for your authority level
  • Consider targeting a lower-difficulty variation
  • When Intent Shifts

If your rankings drop and the SERP composition has changed, your content might no longer match the intent. Adapt the content format.

    When You Find Unexpected Winners

Search Console sometimes reveals keywords you rank for accidentally. Double down. Optimise the page for those keywords intentionally.

    The Performance Loop

    Research -> Create -> Track -> Learn -> Adjust -> Repeat.

That's SEO. It's not a project. It's a process. These are the SEO KPIs that actually matter.

After 20+ years and 500+ campaigns, the companies that embrace the loop outperform everyone else. No contest. Ahrefs covers performance tracking as the final critical step in their keyword research framework.
