Yes, Your Competitors Might Be Cheating
It's ugly. It's unethical. And it happens constantly.
Fake reviews — both fake positive reviews on competitor listings and fake negative reviews on yours — are a real problem in local SEO. And it's one more reason why your review response strategy matters so much.
Let's talk about how to fight back.
How to Spot Fake Positive Reviews (On Competitor Listings)
Check reviewer profiles. Click on the reviewer's name. If they've only reviewed one business ever, that's suspicious.
Look for patterns. Multiple reviews posted on the same day? All using similar language? Names that sound generated?
Geographic mismatch. A "local" business with reviews from people in other states or countries.
Overly generic language. "Great service! Highly recommend!" with zero specifics. Real customers mention details.
How to Spot Fake Negative Reviews (On Your Listing)
Non-customers. You don't recognize the name, and no record of them in your system.
No specifics. "Terrible experience" with zero detail about what actually happened.
Competitor employees. Check if the reviewer works for a competitor. People get bold on the internet.

How to Report Fake Reviews
Flag the review through your GBP dashboard. Click the three dots next to the review, select "Report review," and choose the appropriate reason.
Be patient. Google reviews flagging reports and it can take weeks. If the review stays up, submit a formal removal request through Google Business Profile support.
Document everything. Screenshots, timestamps, evidence of why the review is fake. Google's Business Profile support has the formal removal request process documented.
Protect Yourself
The best defense? An overwhelming volume of legitimate reviews. One fake negative review looks insignificant when you have 200+ genuine ones. Build that volume with a solid review generation system.
