You Do Not Need a $500 SSL Certificate
Hear me when I say this.
For SEO purposes, Google does not differentiate between SSL certificate types. A free Let's Encrypt DV certificate gives you the same HTTPS ranking signal as a $500 EV certificate. What matters is that you are on HTTPS — read our HTTPS migration checklist if you have not made the switch yet.
The Types
DV (Domain Validation). Verifies you own the domain. Free from Let's Encrypt. This is what 90% of websites need.
OV (Organization Validation). Verifies the organization behind the domain. Slightly more trust for users but no SEO difference.
EV (Extended Validation). The most thorough verification. Used to show a green bar in browsers. That green bar is gone now. The SEO value? Zero extra.
Wildcard. Covers all subdomains (*.yourdomain.com). Useful if you have many subdomains.
The Bottom Line
Get a free DV certificate from Let's Encrypt. Set up automatic renewal. Move on to the things that actually affect your rankings — like your SEO strategy fundamentals. Once you have HTTPS, watch out for mixed content warnings. Google's SEO guide confirms HTTPS is a ranking signal.
Do not let some hosting company upsell you on an expensive SSL certificate "for SEO." It makes zero difference to Google.
