Local SEO and Voice Search: How to Rank When People Talk to Their Phones

Voice searches are local, conversational, and growing fast. Your local SEO strategy needs to account for them.

"Hey Google, Find Me a Plumber Near Me"

Voice search isn't the future anymore. It's the present.

58% of consumers have used voice search to find local business information. And voice queries are fundamentally different from typed queries.

If your local SEO strategy only targets typed searches, you're leaving a growing segment of searchers on the table.

How Voice Searches Differ

They're longer. Typed: "plumber Austin." Voice: "Hey Google, who's the best plumber near me in Austin?"

They're conversational. Typed: "dentist open Saturday." Voice: "Is there a dentist open on Saturdays near me?"

They're question-based. Voice queries disproportionately start with who, what, where, when, why, and how.

They're hyper-local. "Near me" is implied in almost every voice search. 46% of all Google searches already have local intent — for voice, that percentage is even higher.

How to Optimize for Voice Search

FAQ content. Create pages that answer questions in natural, conversational language. "How much does a dental cleaning cost in Phoenix?" Answer directly, in one or two sentences, then elaborate.

Featured snippet optimization. Voice assistants typically read the featured snippet (position zero). Structure your content with clear questions as headers and concise answers immediately below.

Conversational keywords. Target long-tail, question-based keywords that sound like natural speech.

Local schema markup. Structured data helps voice assistants understand your business details quickly. Google's local business structured data documentation is the technical reference for implementation.

GBP optimization. Voice assistants pull heavily from GBP data for local business queries. Hours, services, phone number — all come from your GBP.

Come closer. Listen.

The businesses winning voice search right now aren't doing anything revolutionary. They're doing great local SEO with a focus on natural language and question-based content.

The Speed Factor

Voice search results tend to come from fast-loading pages. If your site takes 5 seconds to load, you're probably not getting voice results.

Page speed isn't just a technical SEO metric. It's a voice search ranking factor. Our Core Web Vitals guide covers the performance benchmarks you need to hit.
